ShelterBox aiding Asian refugee flood

A Rohingya refugee slum in Bangladesh.

We usually hear about ShelterBox providing disaster relief to areas around the globe battered by floods, earthquakes, monsoons and other natural disasters. But, religious, sectarian and ethnic terrorism continues creating hordes of refugees in need of help.

The latest such situation is in Bangladesh where roughly a half-million Rohingya refugees have poured over the border of the South Asian country fleeing military violence against their ethnic group in neighboring Myanmar (Burma) and are living in squalor in makeshift camps.

There are more than a million Rohingya in Myanmar, but since the 1980s they have not been allowed to have citizenship in their own country. They often are referred to as the world’s most persecuted minority.

Liz O’Dell, who has volunteered for 18 Shelterbox deployments in various parts of the world, says this camp (seen above) is “one of the most shocking” she ever has seen. The squalor is apparent at just a glance. Click here for her video report.

Online eBay auctions sharing profits with Rotary

Rotary members, their families and friends can support Rotary’s work by bidding on antiques, artwork, jewelry, and collectibles through “eBay Live Auctions” events.

Each month, Rotary promotes on its social media outlets a set of upcoming events, and eBay, the world’s largest auction website, donates to Rotary a portion of all sale proceeds from those events.

“eBay Live Auctions” events enable buyers to participate in auctions across the United States — held at such auction houses as Sotheby’s, Swann, and Freeman’s — without leaving home. Under this proceeds-sharing agreement, only U.S. auction sales are eligible.

Numerous auctions are held on nearly a daily basis, and the auctionable items vary greatly — Picasso ceramics, rare signed and unsigned posters, modern and contemporary art, modern and vintage timepieces, metal ad and beer signs, African and Oceanic art and statuary, decorative art, a wide range of jewelry, and on and on.

Swine 2 at the Cantonement

pigs

NEWS FLASH!

We’re always on the lookout for prospective members, but do these new “residents” of the Cantonement qualify?

Club member Carol Orvis reported on the tagged potbellies roaming the grounds of her historic home, and her brother Rob Comly captured this image of the apparent runaways.

Rumors of a Rotary pig roast at the Cantonement are unfounded. The errant strays’ presence has been reported to the proper authorities.

THIS JUST IN!

Q: What is “Swine flu”?
A: The past tense of “When Pigs Fly.”

P.S. For newcomers to the SRC club who aren’t aware of the historic aspect of Carol’s home, you can get a capsule description of it by clicking here.
