District 7190 Rotarians will host a “Peace Summit for Youth” in Mechanicville on Sunday, November 12.
For more than 110 years, Rotary members have been addressing challenges around the world and acting as ambassadors for peace. In today’s global climate, our youth are anxious about international relations, terrorism, America’s position in the world, their personal futurea, and how they fit in.
The “Peace Summit for Youth” will provide a forum to express their concerns and work collaboratively to consider pathways to peace –- peace in their schools, on their streets, and in the world.
The event, organized using the World Café Model, will encourage our youth to explore deeper thought and awareness regarding the issues affecting peace worldwide. The objective is to create an environment in which the youth generate all the content and develop the relevant outcomes for the day.
Our keynote speaker will be Anne Kjaer Riechert, a Rotary Peace Scholar from Germany who is the owner and managing director of an IT training school for Syrian refuges in Berlin.
The summit is open to high school students throughout the Greater Capital Region, including our nine Interact clubs, Youth Exchange, and Rotary Youth Leadership. Then effort will reach into every high school in our community where there is a Rotary club. This not only provides students the ability to participate through Rotary sponsorship, it also affords a learning opportunity about Rotary.
Funds are being raised and volunteers are being recruited. If you are interested in knowing more, please contact District Governor Fred Daniels via email at dgfred2017@gmail.com.
(1.) Do you like lasagna? (2.) Would you like to know what your club will be doing for the remainder of the 2017-18 Rotary Year? (3.) Do you know what Rotary is doing to aid the victims of Hurricane Harvey? (4.) If you answered “yes” to any or all of those questions, then … (5.) have you emailed your RSVP to Debbie Brown (mdbrown@nycap.rr.com) so she includes you in the dinner headcount? We have had no reservation list for this event, so it is very important that you contact her no later than Tuesday evening.
PANTRY SPECIAL DONATION REQUEST
Incidentally, the Anchor food pantry in Castleton, which we have regularly supported for years, has put out a call for donations — of toilet paper! If you’d like to help, please bring packages of any brand TP to Thursday’s meeting and give them to Debbie who will arrange for delivery.
That was Xavier Schmitt’s reaction to his latest batch of Star Wars building pieces received as part of SRC’s continuing “Project Legos” gift package.
That’s the word from his maternal grandma, Debbie Rodriguez. She also reports that Xavier is doing well in his lengthy treatment for leukemia, and is looking forward to the new school year.
Project coordinator Jim Leyhane was pleased with financial contributions made by Rotarians and guests who attended the final “Summer Casual” event last week at Eastwyck Village. But, as always, all projects can use ongoing assistance, so please see Jim if you would like to help out.
Our Club Calendar is a great source of information not only about what our club is doing, but what is going on throughout District 7190 and sometimes beyond it. Some social stuff, some serious meetings stuff, and a lot of things in between.
Make a practice of checking it out either by going directly to the club Facebook page, or by going to the website calendar page and clicking on the link. (The website also displays the individual program assignments for the entire year, so don’t forget to see what dates you’ve been assigned.)
Here’s what the Facebook calendar page looks like as of this morning:
A chicken teriyaki dinner, hosted by Ray and Lois Hannan on Thursday evening, finished off Southern Rensselaer County Rotary’s very busy “Summer Casual Schedule” of picnics, pool parties, and field trips.
It also marked the end of our annual events at Eastwyck Village, where the Hannans reside — until Wednesday. That’s when they will be moving to a new home nearby. SRC thanks them for their gracious hosting efforts during their time at Eastwyck.
We had nearly two dozen people at dinner. Among the Rotarians were, of course, Ray, as well as Roberto Martinez, Bill and April Dowd, Murray and Maggie Forth, Pat Bailey, Jim Leyhane, Dick Drumm, Debbie Rodriguez, Carol Orvis, Dean and Doris Calamaras, and prospective member Adam Roberts who has submitted his membership application.
And, among the guests were, of course, Lois, Adam’s girlfriend Kasie Burrello, Eastwyck friends Josie Fasanaro and Eileen Hempstead, Jeremy Forth, and Beth Hannan Vogel (Ray’s and Lois’s daughter) and her husband Brandon and their kids Colin and Keegan.
The club now is taking a mini-vacation until we resume our weekly dinner meetings at 6:15 p.m. on Thursday, September 7. President Roberto will be delivering a talk on the activities and goals for the club for the remainder of the 2017-18 Rotary Year.
Meanwhile, here are some other scenes from the Eastwyck dinner:

Project coordinator Andy Leyhane and his “muscle crew.”
Southern Rensselaer County Rotary’s 4th annual “School Supplies Drive” for students in the Rensselaer City School District was a major success this summer.
Andy Leyhane, in his first year as project coordinator, delivered a trove of supplies today for high school and elementary students to Circles of Mercy, the Rensselaer family services agency.
“We really appreciate the ongoing relationship we have with SRC,” said Richard Zazycki, Circles’ executive director. “We have a crew of volunteers all set to start dividing up and packaging all the donations for the kids. This is going to make a difference.”
Andy, by the way, got into the spirit of the “kids helping kids” motto SRC has been using as part of the effort, as you can tell by these shots of his helpers.
And, a final thank-you to all SRC Rotarians and friends for their generosity once again this year.
We will wind up our “Summer Casual” schedule at 6 p.m. Thursday, August 24, when Ray and Lois Hannan host a dinner at Eastwyck Village.
Please be sure to email them at ray110b@yahoo.com no later than Tuesday to let them know if you are or are not planning to attend and whether you’re bringing guests.
There will be no charge for dinner, although there will be a donation box for contributions to Jim Leyhane’s “Project Legos” effort.
The menu:
teriyaki chicken
pasta salad
tossed salad
rolls and butter
soft drinks, iced tea, coffee, water
Several people have volunteered to bring a small appetizer or dessert, but more are welcome. Anyone who wants beer, wine or a cocktail is welcome to BYOB.
We hope to see you at Eastwyck Village (click here for directions), after which we will be off until we resume our weekly dinner meetings at Quigley’s on Thursday, September 7, Labor Day week.

Business & Announcements
MEETING TRANSITION — Responsibility for the monthly breakfast meetings, which have been shared by Terry Brewer and Shannon Romanowski, director of the YMCA where meetings are held, has been moved to Presidents-elect Jim Butterworth and Ron Annis, along with Shannon. Their “ownership” will begin with the September 21 meeting, at which Terry will speak on the topic of emergency preparedness. The club extends its gratitude to Terry for his efforts in establishing and nurturing the monthly meeting series for the past two years and its role in helping recruit new members.
SCHOOL SUPPLIES DRIVE — Thanks were extended to Andy Leyhane for taking over coordination from Bill Dowd of our annual school supplies drive for needy students in the Rensselaer City School District. It is a joint effort with Circles of Mercy, a local family assistance organization.
MEMBERSHIP UPDATE — Kevin Leyhane, who has submitted an application for Rotary membership, was welcomed by President Roberto Martinez. Also, Roberto has been in contact with Adam Roberts, an East Greenbush resident who was unable to come to this meeting but says he hopes to attend soon. He, too, has submitted an application. … Terry provided an update on the District 7190 Membership Committee on which he sits and noted the possibility of seeing some districts merged if membership drops too far. … On the club membership front, we still are looking to get some of the school district superintendents to join our club, perhaps under corporate membership. We have several other potential applicants in the pipeline. We did lose one short-term member, Bob DeBenedetti, who did not renew for 2017-18. Current paid membership is a strong 48, not counting two people with applications pending.
PROJECT LEGOS — Anyone wishing to help defray the costs of the effort for Debbie Rodrigiuez’s grandson Xavier, who is undergoing treatment for leukemia, may contact Jim Leyhane who originated the effort.
POLIO VIDEO — “The History of Polio” video co-produced by our club is available in various lengths for the use of other clubs. The Niskayuna club will show it at a September meeting.
PROGRAM: “Rotarians Doing Good in the World”
President Roberto Martinez discusses plans for 2017-18 Rotary Year.
President Roberto Martinez addressed the meeting on highlights of Rotary internationally and locally for the 2017-18 Rotary Year.
Among RI goals are growing and preserving membership; having clubs be financially viable, and developing projects and programs that continue to let us do good in the world, which is our motto for this year.
“This is your club and we are all volunteers,” Roberto said. “Let me know if you are unhappy or need to discuss meetings or projects. We are looking for the newer members to take on new or older projects and run with them. That would help them be engaged.”
He also noted that “timely communications should be a priority, and Bill Dowd is always updating the website.” And, he said, “A good year will be one in which members feel engaged and empowered and feeling like the club is a vehicle for accomplishing our goals.”
Roberto said suggestions received from the membership include bringing in more of the public school administrators as Rotarians; combining our efforts with other organizations’ ; talking with senior groups, and maybe some license plate ribbons or shirts to promote our club and also be used as a fundraiser.
NEXT EVENT: A picnic at Eastwyck Village, 6 p.m. next Thursday, hosted by Ray and Lois Hannon. Please be sure to email Ray at ray110b@yahoo.com no later than Tuesday whether or not you plan to attend, and whether you are bringing guests.
Anyone in need of a few — well, OK, a LOT — of laughs would be well advised to attend a performance of the rollicking musical comedy “Monty Python’s Spamalot” at the Mac-Haydn Theatre in Columbia County. That was the latest event on SRC’s “Summer Casual Schedule.”
After most of the contingent met for dinner, they caught up with a few others on Thursday night for hours of original music; high-brow — and some very-low-brow — comedy; clever speeches and horrid puns, and excellent singing and dancing by a spirited cast.
NOTE: Our final “Summer Casual” event is scheduled for 6 p.m. Thursday, August 24, when Ray Hannan will host us at Eastwyck Village. Please email him at ray110b@yahoo.com no later than Tuesday (August 22) to let him know whether or not you plan to attend, and whether you’ll be bringing guests. After that event, we’re off until we resume weekly dinner meeting at Quigley’s on Thursday, September 7.
Meanwhile, here are a few scenes from Thursday evening:
Most of the crowd met at Yianni’s Restaurant at the Chatham House for a pre-show dinner: (from foreground to the left) Peter Brown, Debbie Brown, Jim Leyhane, Murray Forth, Maggie Forth, Jeremy Forth, Roberto Martinez, Dick Drumm, Carole Spencer, Debbie Rodriguez, Pat Bailey.April and Bill Dowd settling in for a fun evening.Members joined by Russ and Becky Myer of the Capital District Nordic Alliance, one of many organizations we support.Dick and Mary Drumm pose with event organizer Debbie Brown.
From Andy Leyhane, coordinator of this year’s school supplies drive:
We’ve been doing a fantastic job with the drive for school supplies for the Rensselaer City School District kids.
I’ve been leaving our “Summer Casual” events with my car trunk full, and my basement is better stocked than the back-to-school aisle at Target.
We’re nearing the end of the collection period, and I’ll be dropping off the supplies by this coming Monday at Circles of Mercy in Rensselaer where they’ll be collated and then distributed to needy students.
If you have more contributions, Jim Leyhane will be able to collect them at this evening’s event at the Mac Haydn Theatre.
Thanks to all for the huge success of this program.
