This is only one of four SRC Rotary Club field trips coming up for which we need your RSVPs. Go here for the full slate plus details.

It’s getting close to the time to go back to the orchard. In this instance, we’re talking about our 2nd annual “Wine Tasting Dinner @ Goold Orchards.”

Our initial experience last summer met with such positive response that Pat Bailey and Debbie Rodriguez have arranged a return visit for Thursday, August 11.

We’re limited to the first 30 people who make reservations, and we already have 10 signed up. So, we suggest you act very quickly to reserve a seat at the table(s). Reservations are only $20 per person. Please specify your entree choice when you RSVP.

To do so, simply RSVP to the club email at SRCrotary@gmail. Please do not use any other method of responding because we need to avoid confusion so we can supply a solid headcount. Reservation deadline is August 6, but don’t wait till the last minute.

We will begin with a guided wine and cheese sampling from 6 to 6:30 p.m., featuring the products from Goold’s own on-premises Brookview Station Winery. That will be followed by dinner.  Here’s the dinner menu:

Entree choices
Stuffed Filet of Sole (broiled fish with a Fuji apple stuffing)
or

Accompaniments
Wild rice and grilled seasonal vegetables

Desserts

Has your RSVP response been recorded?

Screen shot 2016-07-22 at 12.12.56 PMWe have a very busy rest of the summer, and it’s important to pay attention to the earlier-than-usual reservation deadlines for each event.

If you already have responded, great. If you haven’t, we need to hear from you ASAP. Just click on the Summer RSVP Chart (it’s a lot bigger than the sample shown here) to double check that your responses have been listed.

To simplify the process, there’s just one way to make a reservation: e-mail us at SRCrotary@gmail.com so your decision is officially on the record. As always, please specify if you’re bringing guests.

Can’t recall the details of any of the upcoming events? Just click here to get ’em.

TU is first to cover our new District Governor

News releases and photos this week were sent to 15 daily and periodic publications in District 7190 to introduce the public to new District Governor John Mucha, and to Rotary in general.

The first to publish any of the information was the Times Union, which posted some of it it in both its print edition and on its website today. Here’s what the coverage looked like:

Early reservation dates for all August events

SRC Locations
OUR VENUES (top to bottom) — Boathouse Grille, Goold Orchards, Bruno Stadium, Mac-Haydn Theatre.

All four of our club’s August events are in the planning stages, and there is quite a variety. One thing they have in common, however, is that earlier-than-usual reservation deadlines are a “must.”

In each instance, we’re dealing with companies that need to know seating and service arrangements, so we don’t have the luxury of Tuesday night deadlines we have for most of our dinner events.

The RSVP deadlines are shown below. In every instance, please send reservations or regrets only via the club’s email  rather than using any verbal, third-person, or other methods. That will lessen the potential for confusion or someone’s reservation being overlooked.

Here’s the current rundown:

Dinner at Donovan’s Shady Harbor Marina (August 4)

We’ll be ordering drinks and food off the menu, so your prices will vary, but the folks at the marina’s Boathouse Grille need to know how many of us will be descending on the New Baltimore venue for dinner. Click here to get a look at the menu.

RSVP DEADLINE: JULY 29

Wine Tasting Dinner at Goold Orchards (August 11)

This will be our second annual visit to the Castleton facility, where we’ll begin with a tasting of wines from Goold’s own Brookview Station Winery before a wine-inspired dinner. Price: just $20 per person.

RSVP DEADLINE: AUGUST 6

Baseball & Picnic at Bruno Stadium (August 18)

This is one of our biggest family outings each summer. It begins with a picnic dinner in the covered pavilion on the stadium’s first-base side, followed by reserved seats for a New York-Penn League pro baseball game between the homestanding Tri-City ValleyCats and the visiting Aberdeen (MD) Ironbirds. Tickets are $25 each, and cover the meal and the game.

RSVP DEADLINE: AUGUST 4

“The Addams Family” at the Mac-Haydn Theatre (August 25)

It’s opening night for this professional presentation of the iconic family of oddballs that will be “visiting” this Chatham summer theater-in-the-round. Tickets are $30 each, which is cheaper than even the senior discount price.

RSVP DEADLINE: August 9

Please begin emailing your reservations (including guests) or regrets today to  SRCrotary so you don’t miss out on the fun.

Update on ‘School Supplies Drive’

School Supply Drive logoThe next dropoff date for donations to our “School Supplies Drive” for needy kids is Thursday, July 28 (NOT this Thursday). The 28th is the date for a Greek dinner at the Calamaras residence, and I’ll be accepting items there.

Contributions so far have been a bit on the light side, so I’m hoping many more of you will be doing your shopping soon. For those of you with young children, this would be an ideal effort to get them involved as “kids helping kids.”

As mentioned numerous times, the shopping list of needed items is on the club website at SRCrotary.org — just scroll down and you’ll see it.

Also as mentioned, if for some odd reason you don’t plan to participate in any club events up to and including August 21, the absolute deadline for contributions, please call me to arrange a pickup of your supplies.

Thank you on behalf of the kids.

RSVP now for last 2 home-hosted events

Dear Fellow Rotarians & Friends:

We’re asking today for your reservations for the last two home-hosted events of the Southern Rensselaer County Rotary Club’s “Summer Casual” schedule. Please respond by Tuesday, July 19, although earlier is preferable.

After those two events, we’ll be on the road for wine tasting, baseball watching, riverside dining, and theater-going activities to close out the summer. (Get details about those events on the website by clicking on “Calendar” in the “Inside Information” listings.)

Moes• Ray Hannan and David Taylor will be co-hosting a dinner at 6 p.m. at Eastwyck Village this coming Thursday, July 21, with food catered by Moe’s Southwest Grill and a make-your-own-sundae bar for dessert. It’s a BYOB evening, by the way. You don’t need to bring anything else.

Souvlaki• Dean and Doris Calamaras are co-hosting a Greek dinner at their home on Thursday, July 28 — chicken souvlaki and all sorts of other ethnic treats. Because of space limitations and dinner prep workload, attendance will be capped at the first 25 to sign up. We already have 10, so don’t miss out.

HOW TO RSVP: Simply check the two-event schedule below to see if your response is included. If it is not, then please reply to the club email only (SRCrotary@gmail.com) whether you are or are not planning to attend. Even if you are not we need your response to know no one was overlooked. Plus, it’s the courteous thing to do. As always, guests are welcome, but we need to know they’re coming, too, so the hosts can have an accurate headcount.

Have a great weekend, everyone. We hope to see as many of you as possible at the upcoming family-friendly events, a great way to build stronger bonds through Rotary — and have fun doing it.

Dodging the ‘drops en route to a fun evening

Martinez Residence
East Greenbush
July 14, 2016

Members Attending (15): Debbie Rodriguez, Roberto Martinez, Jim Leyhane, Bill Dowd, Andy Leyhane, Murray Forth, Dean Calamaras, Doris Calamaras, David Taylor, Dick Drumm, Terry Brewer, Julius Frankel, Stewart Wagner, Carole Spencer, Becky Raymond. Plus 16 guests.

Despite the threat of storms, the Southern Rensselaer County Rotary Club’s second “Summer Casual” event of the season escaped being rained upon, and we had a good turnout co-hosted by Roberto Martinez and Jim Leyhane. Proceeds of more than $350 are going to the Freedom From Fistula Foundation.

The menu included pulled pork, mac-and-cheese, broccoli salad, appetizers and desserts, beverages … and a lot of good conversation.

Among the numerous guests was Jeff Simons, the new superintendent of the East Greenbush Central School District and a veteran Rotarian in the Rome, NY, area. Jim has signified his intent to join SRC.

Our next event — which already has a dozen reservations despite the heavy vacation schedule — will be a catered southwest picnic at Eastwyck Village, co-hosted by Ray Hannan and David Taylor, at 6 p.m. next Thursday, July 21. Please keep an eye on your emailbox for the weekly RSVP request plus other information. (P.S. This will be a BYOB dinner, so plan accordingly.)

Meanwhile, here are a few scenes from Thursday’s event.
