Schenectady club seeking talent show performers

Screen Shot 2019-03-25 at 8.46.09 PMThe Schenectady Rotary Club is putting the finishing touches on its upcoming “Karaoke & Talent Competition,” but it still is looking for additional talent as well as audience members.

The event, a “funraiser” offering entertainment, competition, cash prizes, and a lot of socializing among Rotarians and their guests, will be held from 4:30 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday, April 4, at the Schenectady Armory Center, 125 Washington Avenue, Schenectady. Tickets are available now online.

Consider this your chance to redeem yourself from that awkward talent show skit you did at summer camp and never lived down, or that “performance” in Vegas you never talk about. The cash bar will help make the performances seem better, or provide the liquid courage leading up to your act.

Now is your chance to showcase your wildest talents that you can complete in a 3-4 minute performance. Or, if you have a friend who would be great at this, let them know this is their time to shine. Duets and group acts are encouraged.

Don’t know the kind of talent you should bring? Consider the following options:

• Comedy
• Stupid human tricks
• Celebrity impressions
• Dancing
• Juggling
• Instrumental music
•  Singing
• Magic
• Sketch comedy
… and, of course, plenty of karaoke!

Recyling Day flyer — pass it around

Here’s the flyer for our upcoming SRC Recycling Day, as always a major fundraiser to help support our youth scholarship programs and community projects.

Please feel free to circulate copies on social media, websites, on bulletin boards at work, school, church, etc. We will be running newspaper ads, posting it on social media, our club website, and our Facebook page. The more we distribute the flyer, the more eyeballs we catch, the more potential dollars we’ll take in, so please help.

‘Rotary Home Cooking’ series set to resume

Home Cooking logoOur annual “Rotary Home Cooking” series, a member-hosted set of dinners/social events, is ready to roll out from March through June. And, we have our first two events  already spoken for.

• Maggie and Murray Forth will host a roast beef dinner at 6 p.m. Saturday, March 16, at their East Greenbush residence. Seating, as it is for all such events, is limited. Please contact the Forths ASAP if you would like to attend. First-come, first-serfved.

• Dean and Doris Calamaras will host a Hungarian dinner at 6 p.m. Saturday, April 13, with a Hungarian Beef, Miskolcz style, entree and all the trimmings. (If you can’t imagine what they are, the Calamarases will provide details closer to the time for reservations to be made. We guarantee they’ll be tasty!) Contact Dean or Doris ASAP to make your reservation.

For those of you unfamiliar with the “Rotary Home Cooking” series details, here are the essentials:

Members volunteer to host and create themed dinners with a limited number of seats available. The hosts supply the food and beverages as their contribution, and they set the price per-person, using a restaurant approximation (usually in the $25 to $35 range). All money raised by attendees’ donations goes to the club’s general treasury to support our many community service efforts.

We now are looking for hosts for May, and June, with dates to be selected by the hosts. We can, of course, have more than one event per month which means we can take more in March and April. If you’re interested, please contact Bill Dowd or Andy Leyhane ASAP.

In the past, themes have spanned a wide range, from “A Greek Evening” to “A Plaza Hotel Recreation” to “Surf & Turf” to “A Beer & Wine Tasting” to “A Taste of New Orleans” to “A Rotary Cocktail Party” to “A French Bistro Event” and more.

7190’s ‘Capital Cabaret’ looking for local talent

Screen Shot 2019-02-19 at 12.24.01 PMIn its inaugural year it was called “Rotary’s Got Talent.” That name didn’t lie, with entertainment ranged from dancing gymnasts to bowling ball freaks to a spoken rendition of iconic rocker Meatloaf’s “Paradise By the Dashboard Light,” and the event was a great night out with friends.

This year, the name has been changed to “Capital Cabaret” as Rotary District 7190 seeks to top last year’s $5,000 raised for the Rotary Foundation. And, the organizers are on the hunt for more talent.

“Capital Cabaret” will be held on Thursday, April 18, once again at the Lucky Strike Social Club at Crossgates Mall in Guilderland. Which club will be the best?  Which will take home bragging rights that their talent won the $500 top prize?

We’re inviting Rotarians, their relatives, friends, neighbors, co-workers, etc., to consider sharing their talents in song or performance, some kind of unique skill, magic or tricks with their pets, and on and on. There are no limits, so long as the act is rated G or PG.

Talent submissions are due by Friday, March 1, and the flyer gives the necessary details. Incidentally, if you bring along a prospective member that person will be admitted at 50% off!

Another satisfied ‘Wine Dinner Raffle’ winner

Screen Shot 2019-02-12 at 12.44.49 PM
Raffle winner Becky Raymond (head of the table) and Cafe Capriccio chef-owner Jim Rua (wearing cap) pose with their guests.

Becky Raymond was the first-prize winner of SRC’s second “Wine Dinner for 12” raffle at Cafe Capricio in Albany. Here is her report:

“What a memorable evening I and my book club members and husbands had last night. Chef Jim and his staff gave us not just a meal, but brought us into the Cafe Capriccio family, and made us feel as if we had landed in Italy for a marvelous family meal. And what a meal! It was way more than we could eat.

“Every aspect of the meal was explained to us, from the ingredients (mostly locally sourced), to the regional origin of each dish. We also learned about Cafe Capriccio’s semi-annual culinary trips to Italy. At least one of our members says she would like to go and bring her son, a chef.

“We were very pleased that Debbie and Chuck Rodriguez could join us. Debbie was able to answer Jim’s questions about Rotary.

“Thank you for arranging this amazing event. It’s a great fundraiser and one we hope will happen again. Not for us, but so that others may also experience it.”

Have you picked up your raffle tickets?

You can buy them for yourself, sell them to others, hand them out as gifts, etc . Any way you do it, there’s a good chance you can win a Cafe Capriccio Wine Dinner for 12, a handmade custom quilt, or tickets to a Capital Rep production for just the purchase of a $20 raffle ticket, an excellent return on investment. The drawing is just 10 days away!

Time to renew your Clynk effort for 2019

Screen Shot 2019-01-01 at 10.02.59 PM

Did you participate in SRC’s Clynk/Hannaford recycling program in 2018? If so, then you helped recycle more than 4,000 returnable bottles and cans and helped raise several hundred dollars to help support our community service efforts. (See accompanying chart above for the environmental impact of that effort.)

However, of you haven’t been joining in, it is not too late. In fact, it’s never too late. All you have to do is:

  1. Get a supply of the approved Clynk recycling bags and bar code stickers.
  2. Then, just put your recyclables into the bags — no need to sort them — and take them to a Hannaford super market.
  3. There, you simply scan the stickers with the hand-held scanner gun and drop them into the drop window.

That’s it. Within 48 hours, your Rotary club will be credited with the donation. You made money for SRC and helped the environment in one easy move.

You can pick up the bags and stickers at any SRC weekly dinner meeting. Too much of an effort? Then just contact Bill Dowd via email (BillDowd4Troy@gmail.com) and he’ll be sure to get you a supply ASAP.
