It’s that time of year; start spreading the word

The first of our annual winter series of Indoor Simulator Golf Tournaments at Burden Lake Country Cub will be held in just a few weeks.

We need every member of the club to help spread the word in any way they can during this holiday period when people’s attention might be on other topics. The more notice we can give the public the better.

All SRC members are being emailed a copy of the attached flyer today. (It already has been posted on the club website, Facebook and Twitter pages.) We ask that you forward it to friends who like to golf, post a copy on your Facebook page, get it posted at your place of work, where you shop or have a beer, at the YMCA, library, churches, schools, etc. Encourage people at such places to get a foursome together for the event. It is open to people of all skill levels.

These tournaments are major sources of funding for our many community service projects, scholarships, grants, etc. Remember, every cent we earn goes toward such initiatives.

A perfect time to clean out the basement and garage

Here are the details of a promising fundraising effort being spearheaded by club members Mike Dewey and Matt Smith, with the venue being donated by Josh Wainman.

Please spread the word, share the flyer (on Facebook would be good!) and take this opportunity to make your New Year’s Resolution to clean out your basement and garage at a very low cost.

If you’ve been wondering for soooo long how to safely get rid of those personal paper records, those old computer keyboards and electronic games, and similar things taking up valuable space in your home, here’s the answer.

And, 100% of the profits will go right back into your community by supporting Southern Rensselaer County Rotary Club projects that benefit people and organizations in need.

How to create a themed basket for our holiday silent auction

basketAs of today, we are a mere three weeks (!) from one of our best-attended annual events — the “SRC Holiday Party & Themed-Basket Silent Auction.”

That’s right. Just 21 days. The dinner and festivities are scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. Thursday, December 22, at the Forth residence in East Greenbush. (And, an advance “thank you” to Maggie and Murray for once again volunteering to be our hosts.)

The basket auction portion of the evening is always a display of ingenuity, and prompts a lot of bidding that supports our club’s many community service projects.

Deciding on a theme, then creating a basket around it, is something everyone can participate in, no matter their artistic skill levels. And, to give you some ideas to jump-start the process, take a look at these examples:

Foundation Dinner a financial success

screen-shot-2016-10-11-at-5-15-03-pmDistrict Governor John Mucha reports that last week’s annual Rotary Foundation Dinner hosted at Saratoga National Golf Club by the District was a winner.

“We had over 200 Rotarians and guests at our Foundation Dinner celebrating the Centennial of the Rotary Foundation,” John said, “and, best of all, we raised in excess of $20,000 for the Foundation. My sincere thanks to all who attended, served on the dinner committee, or supported this effort in some other way.”

Our club had a contingent of six Rotarians, one spousal guest, and our Youth Exchange student in attendance. And, the club contributed a basket of made-in-Rensselaer County items to the silent auction portion of the fundraiser. Go here to see our photo gallery.

GOL golf/bocce registrations due

Screen shot 2016-07-20 at 3.09.20 PMNOTE: This originally was posted on July 20, but since we’re getting close to the event we’re repeating it for the benefit of all who might like to participate.

Save the date: The annual Gift of Life Golf & Bocce Tournament has been scheduled for Wednesday, September 21. And, this year it’s closer to Southern Rensselaer County than ever.

The venue for the 17th annual fundraiser is the Mohawk River Country Club in Halfmoon, Saratoga County, as opposed to its usual venue in Montgomery County.

Our club always has a foursome in the event — and two years ago won top honors — but with the increased size of our membership perhaps we’ll be able to add a golfing foursome as well as a bocce entry.

Not sure how to play bocce? Click here for a perfect “how-to” presentation.

The tournament is the year’s top fundraiser to help District 7190 Gift of Life in its ongoing efforts to provide lifesaving cardiac surgery for children from countries where such help is not available. So far, GOL has saved 200 such lives.

Jennifer Degenhart, tournament chairperson, has several suggestions on how to help the effort even if you’re not golfing or playing bocce. Among them:

• Acting as our host club or dinner sponsor (an awards dinner follows the events)

• Providing raffle items, gift certificates, items for our goody bags (Have any wine or liquor you’re not planning to consume, golf balls/tees/accessories you’ll never use? Pass it on and we can use it in a gift basket.)

• We’ve found that many places you frequent will provide gift certificates to charity organizations if you just ask.

Here are all the details. You can print out the entry form for your convenience of registering.

Nisky plans dinner/concert to battle polio

Screen shot 2016-08-12 at 11.51.53 AMOur fellow Rotarians in the Niskayuna club have issued an invitation to join them at their “All American Party to End Polio.”

The event will begin at 4 p.m. next Saturday, August 20, at Beukendaal Fire Department, 501 Sacandaga Road, Glenville. The concert will feature the Jon Stickley Trio, a bluegrass/jazz group from Asheville, NC, currently on a Northeast tour. Rotary fellowship will begin at 4 p.m. with dinner and the concert will follow, to end about 8 p.m..

The price to attend is just $20 per person ($35 per couple) and includes the concert plus hot dogs, burgers, salad, soft drinks and water. You can purchase tickets online on the district website. If you are unable to attend, you can make a donation on the website to Rotary’s polio eradication efforts. All profits will go to that campaign.

Many food items are being donated by local merchants, which will help us toward our goal of raising $1,000, which will then receive a 2-for-1 match from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation — a total of $3,000, enough to pay for immunizations for about 5,000 children.

ShelterBox challenge: Can you go ‘Off the Grid’?

Screen shot 2016-06-23 at 3.20.15 PM Scroll down to see invitations and sponsorship forms.

Many of us joke that we know people who can’t be parted from their many electronic devices for even a minute. Are you one of those electronic slaves?

Screen shot 2016-06-23 at 3.24.45 PMThere’s a way to find out on the weekend of July 16-17. Take the “Go Off the Grid for ShelterBox” challenge.

This could be an interesting family experiment, seeing that even though you’d have no power you still would not be powerless. By taking part, you’ll get a sense of what life is like for families who lost everything when disaster struck — the kind of people your ShelterBox contributions help around the world. They are forced to live  without electricity, no light, no safety, no place to cook and keep warm. No shelter over their heads.

If you, or you and your family, decide to “Go Off the Grid” it will mean no texting, no downloading, no videos, no tweeting, no music, no TV, no video games, not even lights, for a period of 24 consecutive hours during the designated weekend. But, that doesn’t mean you’d have to sit around like stunned sheep. You can download tips or order an “Off The Grid Survival Box,” packed with BBQ recipes, games, activities and other ideas from the folks at ShelterBox to keep the whole family connected — to each other.

The intent of the challenge is to raise awareness of just how difficult life is without the many everyday things we take for granted, and in doing so to increase interest in donating to ShelterBox. Of course, you can always do that without taking the challenge, but it’s a fascinating idea that your entire family will remember.

You don’t have to be a Rotarian to support ShelterBox. Throw a backyard cookout — call it an “OFF THE GRIDdle BBQ”), invite friends and neighbors (be sure to tell them no phones, tablets, etc., allowed.) Here’s an official invitation …

Screen shot 2016-06-23 at 3.31.51 PM

… and, you can download free copies of it by clicking here. Then, simply send the donations along to ShelterBox. (You also can direct your invitees to our website where they can find details on what ShelterBox is all about.)

Another way to raise funds for ShelterBox is to use the 24-hour event the same way you would a walk-athon, a bike-athon, etc. Get sponsors. Here’s what the official pledge form looks like …

Little Brook Farm plans B.I.T.S. anniversary party

BITS321Some of our longer-term members are aware of Little Brook Farm, the Chatham facility that is the oldest equine rescue center in the nation. Our club as a whole and some members as individuals have financially contributed to the non-profit over the past few years to further its training and rescue programs.

One of Little Brook’s major programs is called B.I.T.S. — which stands for Balanced Innovative Teaching Strategies, a state-approved curriculum in its 30th year of operation.

To mark that milestone, founder Lynn Cross, who has made presentations to our club several times, is hosting an anniversary party at The Hill at Little Brook Farm beginning at 6 p.m. Saturday, July 16. It’s a cocktail-attire event, with tickets priced at $140 in advance or $160 at the door, all tax deductible. Admission covers an open beer-and-wine bar and an array of hors d’oeuvres, plus a silent auction and a live auction.

All donations will go toward completion of the farm’s indoor arena and provide funding for B.I.T.S. Tickets are available via PayPal, or by sending a check payable to B.I.T.S. Inc. to P.O. Box 127, Old Chatham, NY 12136.

Little Brook is located at 548 County Route 13 in Old Chatham. Phone: 518-821-5506 or 794-8104.
