Your RSVP and input needed for our Holiday Party

SRC Party 2019

You have just four days left to submit your RSVP for our annual Holiday Party & Basket Silent Auction.

We’re planning a traditional holiday prime rib dinner at the East Greenbush home of Maggie and Murray Forth at 6 p.m. Thursday, December 19. It’s just $25 per person for the main meal and beverages.

Here’s your pre-party “to-do” list:

• If you haven’t yet let Maggie or Murray know you’re coming, please do so no later than this Thursday either by letting Murray know at this week’s dinner meeting, or by calling the Forths at 518-477-7433.

• We’re asking guests to bring an appetizer or dessert, but to avoid an overload — or “underload” — in either category it would be appreciated if you would call Maggie well in advance to coordinate your contribution.

• We hope you’re working on  your themed gift basket for the silent auction fundraiser. (If you’re stuck for ideas, check the club website at SRCrotary.org for some tips.) It’s a major, fun part of the festivities each year.

In the holiday spirit,
Your Rotary Club

Save the date for our 60th anniversary bash

60th logo1960 was a momentous year.

The Civil Rights Act became law. “The Flintstones” debuted on TV. The laser and the cardiac pacemaker were invented. The Olympic Summer Games were held in Rome. JFK won the presidency and Dwight Eisenhower completed his second term. The U.S. sent the first contingent of troops to Vietnam. The Alfred Hitchcock classic film “Psycho” and Harper Lee’s classic novel “To Kill a Mockingbird” were released. Chubby Checker introduced us to a dance craze called The Twist.

Oh, and the East Greenbush Rotary Club was founded.

It is that founding of what now is known as the Southern Rensselaer County club we are planning to celebrate, and we’d like to have you and your loved ones join us.

The date: Thursday, March 5, 2020.

The venue: The Berkshire Ballroom of the Comfort Inn on Miller Road in Castleton.

The event: We’ll have a catered dinner and bar, and plenty of surprises.

So, please circle and save that date on your calendar. We’ll provide details as arrangements are firmed up, but we wanted to let you know the date well in advance.

Meanwhile, if you have any suggestions about what you would like to have the event include, please let event coordinator Bill Dowd know.

‘Ragtime’ added to ‘SRC Summer Casual Calendar’

Screen Shot 2019-06-03 at 4.10.00 PM

“Ragtime: The Musical” is what its producers call “an epic, devastatingly touching adaptation” of the E.L. Doctorow “Ragtime” novel.

You’re invited to join fellow Rotarians for a performance on Thursday, August 1, at the Mac-Haydn Theatre in Chatham, SRC’s annual summer theater outing as part of our “Summer Casual Calendar.” And, once again we’ll be having a pre-theater group dinner at Yianni’s at Chatham House, 29 Hudson Avenue in Chatham.

If you’d like to make your reservation now, it would be smart so tickets don’t run out. Debbie Brown, event coordinator, is the person to contact for both theater and dinner reservations.

The Berkshire Award-winning combination of John Saunders and Sebastiani Romagnolo will  join forces again to put their stamp on the show. Says Romagnolo, “The American Dream, different for each of us, is defined by our race, our class, our origins. ‘Ragtime’ is a gorgeous revelation of that fact. It reminds us that the struggle for equality is never finished and that ultimately it is our differences that make a stronger and better world.”

Jimm Halliday, who won a Helen Hayes Award for Best Costume Design for his Kennedy Center production of “Ragtime,” is handling the same chore at Mac-Haydn.

This is one of the first two “Summer Casual Calendar” events now on our July-August schedule. The other is our annual trip to Bruno Stadium at Hudson Valley Community College for a picnic in the pavilion followed by a ValleyCats professional baseball game against New York-Penn League opponent Lowell Spinners — a Boston Red Sox farm team — on Thursday, July 18. Terry Brewer again is coordinating that field trip, so please contact him ASAP to reserve tickets. Guests are welcome as always.

As most of you know, in recent years the “Summer Casual Calendar” has been a mix of cookouts, pool parties, baseball games, summer theater performances, and other family-oriented get-togethers. Guests are always welcome, and it’s a good time to let potential members get to know us in a relaxed setting, or for you to personally contact members whose participation has been lagging to get re-energized with Rotary.

How, you may ask, do we come up with activities? It’s totally up to you, our members. Some organize field trips, some like to host a pool party and/or a cookout, some come up with other imaginative activities.

The key is planning well ahead so people with busy summer schedules know ASAP what dates to reserve.

As always, the club president coordinates the dates, with the help of the webmaster. For this summer, that means Phil Kellerman and Bill Dowd, plus anyone else President-elect Phil may designate. So, if you plan to get involved as an event organizer, the first thing to do is pick a date and let Phil and Bill both know what and when the event is so it can get a place on the “Summer Casual Calendar.”

Looking forward to your ideas!

ORIGINAL POST:

Believe it or not, we are just a little more than a month from the start of our annual “Summer Casual Calendar,” that July-August period in which we switch to a less rigorous, more social schedule.

It covers the weeks that are home to the following Thursday dates:

• July 11
• July 18
• July 25
• August 1
• August 8
• August 15
• August 22

(Note: Events are not required to be held on Thursdays if another day of the week works better for a particular activity. )

Brush up, our annual trivia extravaganza is near

Screen Shot 2019-04-10 at 3.48.04 PM

How are your trivia skills? The path to the championship of this popular annual event is wide open. We have had a different title-winner in each of the extravaganza’s first four years, so obviously no one has dominated it and lots of people have a chance.

Even if you’re not interested in the competitive aspect, we guarantee you’ll have fun and a few laughs when  you join your fellow SRC Rotarians and guests as we roll out the event at our Thursday, April 18, dinner meeting at Quigley’s.

Quizmaster Bill Dowd has made a number of format changes for this year’s quiz, including fewer categories, a longer list of tie-breakers if needed, and, of course, a new set of questions.

The categories:

  • Write On
  • In the Kitchen
  • 3 Little Words
  • Royal Flush
  • Potpourri

Meanwhile, you still have a few weeks to watch “Jeopardy” — new episodes shown at 7:30 weeknights on WTEN-ABC — to help polish your trivia skills.

Deadline today for holiday party dinner RSVP

Screen Shot 2018-12-14 at 12.55.34 PM
Dual entrees on holiday party menu.,

Usually we have a Tuesday deadline for dinner meeting reservations, but our next gathering is anything but a meeting — and the RSVP deadline is today!

This Thursday is our annual Holiday Party & Themed Gift Basket Silent Auction, set for 6 p.m. at Quigley’s. Event coordinator Debbie Brown is accepting reservations until this evening via email to mdbrown@nycap.rr.com.

We look forward to seeing everyone Thursday evening, SRC’s last event until the New Year.

The price per person is just $25 each for a loaded buffet — roast beef and eggplant parm entrees, chef’s choice of side dishes, mashed potatoes, antipasto salad, bread, an assortment of desserts, and a surprise appetizer — PLUS a self-serve bar with wine, beer, and soft drinks. Guests are welcome as always, but an RSVP is necessary.

And, while you’re partying, you can get in some late Christmas shopping by bidding on the themed gift baskets that will be available through the popular silent auction we hold each year to help support our many community service efforts.
